Castle Cary Fire Station

This retained station was built for Somerset Fire Brigade in 1959. In fact the scars left when the Somerset lettering was removed can be seen. I used to live round the corner from this station when I was a child so I got to see the vehicles based here about the town fairly often. To the best of my knowledge the vehicles based at Castle Cary have been:

YYB763 Dennis F25 WrT 1959 - 1974
YYC316H Bedford TKEL HCB Angus WrT 1974 - 1983
FYC93Y Bedford TK Saxon WrL 1983 - 2000
W266RYB Volvo FL6.14-250 Saxon WrL 2000 - 2007
WA57GXN M.A.N 14.285 J.D.C WrL 2007 - Present

Until recently there was also a Land Rover based here they were:

461FYB 88'' Series II Soft Top 1959 - 1977
SYA887R 88'' Series III Soft Top 1977 - 1999
T521RYA 110'' Defender Station Wagon 1999 - ?

Here's a question/tasking for you George, where was the old Fire Station in Castle Cary prior to this one? In the Somerset Fire Brigade book there is a photo of the Cary crew stood next to a trailer pump on the back on an ATV. It looks like the Fire Station in the background. Any ideas. I'm not sure and I don't have my records to hand but I seem to remember Cary had another MAN prior to this one. Are you going to Odiham this weekend you just might see a Somerset Dennis F28 Water tender there.

I managed to find out roughly where the old fire station was. It was next to the horse pond in a small building with red doors. I will try to finfd the building and get a photo of it if I can next time I visit Castle Cary. I don't know about the second M.A.N but it is possible. I am going to try and go to Odiham on the Saturday so hopefully I might get to see the Dennis which I guess may be 703LYA.

I have located the building George mentions on Streetview, but it wouldn't have been large enough to house an ATV and TrP, so I suspect this was an earlier station. It's off Park Street, adjacent to the Horsepond

Kevin, could I please purchase from you photo/s of Margate Fire Station from the 1980s with 2 pumps parked on the forecourt??

Roy - I don't have any pictures of Margate in the 1980s. On my site www.firestations.org.uk there is a picture by Ken Reid that you may be referring to. You will need to contact him regarding purchase of a copy.
