A tl and an alp at one station?

Isle of Wight have only ten stations and this is the only wholetime one. The TL used to be based at Ryde, a day-manned station. The ALP has recently been replaced by a new Scania ALP.

With a back-up aerial appliance a good ferry ride away, isolated places like the Isle Of Wight need to make sure they can 'stand alone', as it were. I can't think of another UK station that houses two aerials. Leicester did until one of their ALPs moved to Hinckley. And I remember Rewley Road having two not so long ago. Anybody . . .?

And Dave, how long has Ryde been day-crewed?

According to the latest fleet list there are two pumps, a water carrier and 4x4 as the current Ryde lineup.

Hi David,

I visited the IOW last year and the TL was at Ryde and the WRC was at Newport. I believe Ryde is now either day crewed or wholetime now.

For several years after the York Minster fire, the City of York had both an AEC-Merryweather 100' TL and an ERF-Magirus 100'TL at the central city station. This was because the roof fire in the newly-renovated Minster needed two TLs, and at the time York had only one, so the second one had to respond from Harrogate, which took quite a long time. But York has been back to a single aerial for many years now - probably due to the cost of operating two.
