Dennis Metz LCE 212

Ex Cambridge Dennis Metz ladder shortly after arrival in Faro about 1976. This is at the old harbourside municipal station, which is still there but now (last time I was there) occupied by the Bombeiros Voluntarios.

Thank you Alan for posting this picture having seen the comments on picture #20601. I have read that it left Cambridgeshire in 1979 but as you have it pictured in Portugal around 1976, I shall amend my records.
I see that as in picture #20601, it does not have a Dennis badge on the radiator grill.

Chris - Please don't amend anything on my say so. I visited Portugal many times from 75-82, and could be mistaken. It could well have been 79. I will only know for certain when I find the negatives.

This particular ex-Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service 1953 Dennis F14/Dennis/Metz 104' Turntable Ladder(reg-LCE 212)was sold to Lagos,Algarve-Portugal in 1979.

So I finally got to the Algarve & spoke with a fireman at Lagos who remembers this machine, however it never served there, it definitely went to Faro (as can be seen on the can door). If & when I get there I shall try to follow it up. A friend has informed me that due to the Portuguese vehicle licensing system it would be very expensive for a private individual to pay to tax an ex emergency service vehicle. This is as it would be similar to taxing it for the first time and as such the authorities would apply the equivalent rate for the vehicle based on its new value & also considering engine size etc. So a 1950's TL would have a levy based on the cost of a new TL. This is the same when importing, so helps explain why 2nd life appliances brought in from abroad are kept in service so long & why preserved machines appear only to be kept within brigades. Otherwise they go for scrap, the intriguing thing about Portugal is they still have 'proper' scrap yards (which not only seem to value the metals, but the potential in the vehicle) within which there are some amazing finds of what in th UK we would consider classics - so as for this TL.. You never know

John, You are very good with information could you please help am I right in saying that the former Borough of Newport Dennis F.36 Turntable Ladder was exported to Portugal. This appliance was in the unique Coventry Fire Brigade Yellow Livery it was a D reg 1966. I was also informed that the F.45/F.48 were also possibly exported out there. Please "John" can you help or advise I am so sorry I don't have the original index numbers to hand think one was DDW and the other SDW the T.L ended in D. BOB CARVER
