Dennis Sabre

A very smart Dennis Sabre from Plymton taking water from Dartmouth Harbour using hard suction during a serious fire on 28 May 2010. Does anyone know why one of the hoses is coming out of the side rather than the delivery valves at the rear?

I'm think the hose on the side might be leading to a jet directed at the fire, but I don't know for certain.

Must have a delivery next to the hosereel in the lockers either side. Common in Europe but not here in England.

It could be the Tank Fill (from a Hydrant or another pump) some brigades have the Tank Fill going in the side so the pump bay doesnt get so clutterd with hose.

hey Richard, nice to see some DSFRS appliances :)

not sure about the hose, maybe an overflow(?) i checked the website when i heard about this one and it seems they had an appliance from nearly every South Devon fire station !

Hi Chaps,
I think these outlets are for CAFS. It has a different coupling compared to the instantaneous click coupling. I've heard that the normal couplings were not strong for the CAFS, how true this is, I don't know

Think it could be a rapid deployment hose. Some Surrey rapier had a flaked length with branch connected in rear lockers so this might be something similar?

Hi Dermot,
What is a CAFS? The side outlet did have a screw coupling rather than an instantaneous so you may well be on the right track.
All the Best, Richard

@dermot - definitely not CAFS, devon has only just bought their CAFS appliances and they're all MAN chassis. this is Paigntons sabre and it's not listed as CAFS equipped... anyone throw any light on this?

The Somerset Volvo's also have the same, a flaked length accessed from a rear facing compartment next to the pump bay.

yes Dermot...they are fitted with stortz couplings...but normally have yellow hose for the cafs

Hi Richard, The CAFS stands for Compressed Air Foam System. I thought it might be these because I saw a similar setup on a neighbouring brigades appliance

Hey all, I found out that the hose is coming from a standard delivery piped off to the side. The above Sabre is from Plymton not Paignton as I wrongly stated, that's what happens when you don't read the description :)

The CAFS system works on a reel similar to a hose reel I believe and not a main delivery size hose as the bore of the hose is to big. Up until recently there was a situation after Devon and Somerset merged that Somerset had appliances with CAFS on which were purchased prior to the merger however Devon had none. Hence the reason why the MAN from Wellington is often mobilised to incidents well into Devon for CAFS.

As a serving firefighter in Devon, let me put the record straight: The pumps on our Sabres have 4 deliveries, of which the far left and right deliveries are piped through to the side lockers. This gives the advantage of keeping the pump bay tidier which means I don't constantly trip over the hoses when trying to operate the pump!

Thanks Alex for finally giving a definitive answer. Thanks also to those who had a go. I also now know what CAFS stands for!

How did the marriage of Devon and Somerset come about? Wouldn't Devon and Cornwall be logistically better?
