First Volvo WrL in the United Kingdom

Registered on 22nd July 1987, D999TFY was the first Volvo chassised WrL to enter service in the UK. Based on the FL6.18 chassis with Fulton+Wylie bodywork, she started her service at E2 Deeside fire station in Clwyd. A second Volvo FL6.18/F+W soon followed for W5 Denbigh. D999TFY was reallocated to W9 St Asaph in 1991 when Deeside received a Volvo FL6.14/F+W WrL H72 HKC. She was later replaced at St Asaph in 2000 when Colwyn Bay received Volvo FL6.14/Saxon WrL V35 DRN and Mercedes-Benz 1124F/Saxon WrL M51 BEY was allocated there.

On wednesday of this week, D999TFY, along with other machines, ware taken to Tyldsley to be broken up and due to the present incumbents paranoia, a glorious chance of preserving our fire engine heritage has passed us by.

Thanks for the photo Andy, I remember her turning out not long after Clwyd having her and thinking at the time, wow thats different. Agree about the paranoia, surely these ex London, fully liveried Volvo/Saxon pumps would be first choice and authentic "Trojan Horses". D999TFY had to be one of the most important pieces of Postwar fire engine heritage, and has been denied to us all by the "flat earthers". Thank god they dont own the Flying Scotsman!

Volvo wanted this Appliance back apparanetly to have in in there Museum. Would have been great to see it back into full County Of Clwyd Fire Service livery and a nice re spray.

Stupid question: Where are the differents between WrL & Rescue Pumper?

This is strange , I was at E2 Deeside when the appliance came into service , i had my photo taken with it . in front of the number plate which was published in the local paper, the photo is in my fire album, its a shame its gone for scrap

Clarence, it really isn't a stupid question! For a comprehensive answer, I suggest you look at picture 7756.

Having seen this appliance today, she is still around albeit minus beacons and repeaters.

Today (12/8/11) saw the disposal of one of the final County of Clwyd Fire Service Volvo appliances. G897DKD was allocated to W6 Holywell in 1990 replacing ERF 84RF/ERF Fire-fighter WrL HEY245N. G897DKD was being towed along the M56 eastbound with her front wheels off the road and totally devoid of any embelishments whatsoever. Goodbye old girl.

At least the Merc/Saxon have outlasted many Gwynedd ones! K32TCC is running as Wrexham 2nd(WT) appliance again, after Mondays bid by an MAN to become a choirboy at St Marcella's in Marchwiel.

Gwynedd's fleet were manual as standard and Clwyd's were automatic. TM perfers automatic for some reason but due to the topography of Gwynedd, manual gearboxes were needed to whack the gearstick into a lower gear for the inclines which was quicker than waiting for kickdown in the auto gearboxes. I much, much perfered Gwynedd's fleet to Clwyd's. Bedford, Ford and Dodge in Gwynedd and Clwyd stedied the ship for a while with Dennis' untill DCC955X Dodge G1313/Carmichael PL arrived in 1982 at W2 Colwyn Bay to replace the former County of Flint Bedford TK/HCB-Angus WrE BDM949J. BDM949J ended her day's when her engine exploded on the A548 coast road en route to the Mostyn Dock explosion at Warwick Chemicals.

Autos are more thirsty in these frugal times though! Cumbria prefered manual for same reason as Gwynedd. The sound of a Rolls Royce in a Dennis R was music I think, Clwyds early fleet was a very eclectic mix and better for it. Did BDM run as a WrT towards the end? As I have a pic of it with no escape and an Ajax ladder. Clwyds Auto box Dennis, Dodge and Volvo could be notched down on lever but push button boxes should never have been put on appliances. My Dodge is manual and is a dream to drive!

Not sure about BDM Gary. Every time I saw her on the bell and around Rhyl the escape was attached.
