Attention, Range Rover enthusiasts! This is in fact the 2nd Range Rover ever buit. It began as a 2-dr green car and was then converted to become the Carmichael Commando prototype fire appliance -and therefore also the first ever six-wheel Rrange Rover too! It originally served with Marshalls of Cambridge as an airport truck, but was damaged prior to delivery and had to be returned to Carmichaels for rebuilding even before it entered service! It is now in preservation, as seen here.
Not personally sure how this one began, but YVB 151H was most certainly a green 2-door car, and was Range-Rover chasis No. 1. It's now with the Land Rover Centre at Hudersfield. YVB 152H was (understandably) chassis number 2. There was also YVB 153H (chasis no. 3) which wass last heard of as being with Heritage Centre at Gaydon - which is where you took this one, Walter. A total of 25 pre-production Range Rovers were built in late 1969-early 1970, and these were registered YVB 151-175H.

I remember driving one of these in 1969, it was a four wheeler and had no interior trim and just a drivers seat, went very well.I can't remember the reg. no. though, and it wasn't called a Range Rover, it had the name Velar.
That sounds right, Roger - and they also used the name Road Ranger if memory serves me correctly, before finally opting for Range Rover.

It is apparently for sale, I heard the owner is asking £20, 000? Although historic in terms of the first 6x4 Commando it is some 30 years old and in need of a bit of restoration. It has had a bit of welding etc when first out of service and my group would love to preserve it but the cost is too high even for historic purposes....Shame.
