WEST YORKSHIRE VOLVO WATER LADDER IJ57VDY

West Yorkshire fire and rescue. Volvo Water Ladder. Seen way over the 'border' in Harrogate, North Yorkshire on May 5th 2010. It had just left the scene of a major fire at the Majestic Hotel Harrogate. The old building in the upper right of the photo is the Hotel involved.

Hi Andy. Im not sure what West Yorkshire call these appliances, so I just called it a water ladder (sorry) !

It's ok Paul, I got pillered by someone for writing the Gwynedd history for the Fire brigade Society back in 1992 stating that 464's are not WrT and 13.5 are not WrL. We're only human.

West Yorkshire always used to call their pumps a RPL,or RP.I can assume that means Rescue Pump Ladder(WrL)and Rescue Pump(WrT???).These days though with most appliances carrying a 13.5 ladder-its a Water Tender Ladder as far as I'm concerned.

This appliance was sold this evening (2-10-2017) at Merthyr Motor Auctions for £18, 200 plus auctioneers costs (at least £1,000) plus VAT. YJ57 VEF went for £19, 100 plus extras.

Why are they selling 10 year old appliances? I thought they would have a longer service life?

Added by Andy on 04 October 2017.
At the moment all of West Yorkshire's pumping appliances have a 10-year service life but that is going to be extended to 12 years. They still have some 56-plate Volvo's but the two FLL's that they have just sold were up for a major service so they decided to sell them now as they were due for disposal in January. An interesting comparison with West Yorkshire is Cornwall who still have 25-year-old appliances on the run.

Andy:

There are plenty of much older European trucks working on the front line alongside American rigs in places like Argentina. It is not unusual to see them with forty or even fifty years of service, and still going strong!

But, if you want to cite a really unbreakable US manufacturer, I think Mack must hold the title....
