It's interesting to me to see this Austin ATV and know it's still running; Pete Madden has entered it once before, and I'm sorry to have missed it. This particular Austin was one of several that were delivered to 11B1Z in 1942(Winchester). Three came on one day, GLE155, GLE156, and GLT396 and was still there when I left in October of 1943. GLE155 was put right to work as second turnout behind the Dennis PE, ECG272, and sat on the appliance floor along with the PE and a Fordson Heavy Unit with Tangye skid mount pump. Sometimes the Ford and the Austin would turn out for city fires and on occasion the ATV GLE156 plus Dispatch Rider and Station Officer in small black Autin 8. GLT396 spent most of its time in the reserve shed along with a Fordson hose layer and a Fordson Mobile Dam Unit(GLC937). The AFS drilled with it,replacing the stable of car ATVs, a mixed bag of converted passenger cars that had been cut up with a box bolted on the rear. The only time I rode in GLT396 was one late evening I was helped crew it for a drill in Southampton, 12 miles distant; I had the job of ringing the bell all the way down, the Section Leader insisting on this being very serious drill.` (In case anyone wonders,Dispatch riders turned out to all calls on the first day of the shift, but on the second day they usually crewed on one the machines--- 7. we actually were trained at the training school. At the end of the war, 1947, the first two Austins were still at that station but GLT396 had been taken back to the Home Office stores in Wiltshire.
