Bedford TK Chemical Incident Unit

This photo was taken by Bristol Bob and is published with his permission. With reference to Pete Matten's comment on picture 477 about chequered markings on Control units,Emergency tenders and Chemical incident Units here is a picture to demonstrate the yellow and black markings of a Chemical unit. This is the former City of Bristol/County of Avon Chemical incident unit from Brislington at a fire at Fowlers Motorcycles,Bristol in 1986. This appliance did survive in preservation until recently.

Thanks for sharing Bob's picture with us Paul. The picture actually shows the 1971 Bedford TLEL/Taylors (reg-BHW 486J) Chemical Incident Unit/Salvage Tender that was originally based at Speedwell Road, (City of Bristol F.B.)Bristol. In 1976 it was moved to Brislington now under the County of Avon Fire Brigade and served until 1986 when it went out of service.
This must certainly have been one of its last shouts attended, and certainly was a make-pumps plenty.

The 20th September 1986 job at Fowler's went to 15 pumps, TL and HP (plus other specials), whilst a job at their premises on 9th March, 1987 went to 20 pumps with 2 TLs (also plus specials of course)

Lovely, characterful little machine. Believe attendance was 15 Pumps, TL, HP, CU, CIU, BASV but stand to be corrected.

This appliance was sold on ebay in July 2009 and it appeared to be in very good condition. The listing stated it had spent 10 years in a museum.

I have seen this in preservation and it was a lovely machine. I always liked the unusual rolling type chrome siren, which unless I am wrong always seemed a rarity on local authority machines?

Most of the post war Bristol front line appliances had sirens, even a couple of Land Rover wireless vehicles and the Ford Zephyr estate car.
Bristol ambulances also had sirens in the 1960's but police cars did not even have a bell !

Re the attendance's at the 2 Fowlers incidents, they were indeed 15 and 20 pumps respectively.
In the first incident,i believe the only reason that this Bedford was there was because it was already out with the pump from Brislington and went on with a split crew when the pump was ordered on,it is not shown on the log as attending.

no John.....many LA Authority brigades had rolling sirens in the 50s and 60s, most went on to fit two tones when they became popular over here

The ciu was owned by my father for many years its a shame he sold it , buying it direct from the brigade after working on it at speedwell .Im glad to hear its in good condition.
