I think this is a hose reel tender?

Added by Alan Smith on 30 April 2012.
The implication of the name being that this appliance tenders hosereel/s to the fire ground, as it's only or primary/core function?

Hose reel tenders were small 'first aid' appliances staioned in rural areas. They carried 300 galls of water and two hose reels with a crew of four retained men. Waltham's HRT (for example) only just fitted in the old station with the wing mirrors folded in! Binbrook station was a farmers barn. Such was the state of many poor rural brigades in the 1960s.
I don't remember North Somercoates old station but all retained stations were re-equiped with water tenders as fast as Lindsey County Fire Brigade's new station building programme could build them. Many, if not all, the stations are still in use today. Hope this helps.

That info is fantastic thank you Alan, I had not heard the term before so was interested to know exactly what it meant. Interestingly similar to the TRV's or RIV's of today.
Thank you for including a little history too, I can only imagine some of the tiny buildings used to house the appliances. A truly great example of the fighting spirit Britain used to be famous for.
Keeping a village protected with the help of a farmers barn doesn't exactly fit well with the corporate image our fire services strive for today.
Thanks again.
Monkey.

My picture 16275 shows a Bedford hose reel tender in use with Bristol fire Brigade, so some were used in urban areas as well.

I assume the HrTs towed a traler pump ie they were a more modern ATV, if so what size and make of TP?

Added by Neal Glover on 04 May 2012.
Well, I have learnt something new now. Thank you Bristol Bob.
As for trailer pumps and HRT's, I don't remember the Lindsey ones towing a trailer pump.

HrTs frequently carried less than 300 galls--the Lindsey one shown here only carried 200. The pump was not as we would expect today--sitting at the rear of the appliance but was directly driven off the PTO on the gearbox--and they did not always tow a TrP

The idea of such a basic rig seems a bit ridiculous. But - I do recall a station officer at the Whitby fire station telling me in 1958 that his crews were able to deal with over 90% of their fires with the 130 gallons of water carried on their ex NFS Fordson pump escape, never mind the additional 400 on their Commer Plaxton water tender!
