Dennis are the best appliances out there and always have been in my opinion. Why don't all brigades have air horns fitted as well as sirens and two tones like the USA.They sound great and certainly let people know to get out of the way!
i have riden in one of these and these are awesome fast and compare nothing to the scania's or volvos and sound truely awesome to especially from the cleveland service
This machine is one of several purchased under the joint partnership scheme operated by the four North East fire brigades, (Cleveland, Tyne and Wear, Durham, and Northumberland, )Cleveland have so far recieved eight Sabres under this arrangement. This machine is I believe now at Stranton in Hartlepool.
in my opinion dennis are good machines but i feel they don't look the part unlike scanias and volvo. Although they don't look good they are still a great machine i agree that all appliances should be fitted with the horns as well.
Some fire and rescue services in the UK will not fit air horns as they say it encourages aggresive driving by the appliance driver. They are very useful on open roads outside towns because some sirens and two tone horns are of no use when traffic is doing more than 40 mph due to noise inside other vehicles.
Louder Air Horns and other type of warning equipment are used because of the basic inability of other road users to obey the highway code, which clearly state's that 'you must give way to blue light emergency vehicles'. The Fire personnel who drive these vehicles are highly trained proffessionals who carry out their duties to the best of their abilities, they do not engage in 'aggressive driving'. As for noise inside other vehicles in towns, most of this 'noise' eminates from excessivly loud music played by aggressive young males (mostly under 25) with the mental capacity of a goldfish, who should not be given a Dinky Car let alone a real one! Lets not make excuses for other drivers bad driving habits! Sorry to sound like this, but I get really vexed when there is critisisim (real or implied)aimed at people who put their lives on the line for the rest of us!
fire cadet kelly, i would like to say i am glad you are posting a reply at your age and everyone is entitled to an opinion, i am also pleased that you are obviously looking at the fire service as a career, i have been a firefighter for 26 years and can assure you that from an operational viewpoint dennis are the best big time, it sad that they are getting thinner on the ground as the scandinavian makes are regarded as trendy at the moment perhaps dennis may upgrade their cab to look a bit more modern but in all honesty i think it looks just right, good luck in your career, Alan
Thanks Barry, all i can say is if anyone has worked both a sabre /rapier and the scania there is only one winner, speed, handling ease of access /eggress, room and comfort to name just a few, but we as firefighters dont buy them, i know the scandanavian/german converted lorry chassis are less expensive but they are not reknown for thier endurance (witness merseyside rebodying some sabre chassis )and the long term benifits should i would have thought more than make up for the initial purchase cost, but the again i am only the one that has to climd in and out with a set on my back, not the one that has to make this years books look good, have a good new year and all the best everyone for 2008

I always knew our mates in New Zealand had more sense than us, yes my friend you will get many years of use from your rebirths and we will be sending our newer volscanmercs to the scrappy, and by the way i am only speaking from experience and wont be rabbiting on about it again, good luck and my e-mail addy is [email protected] spk to you soon
