Darlington had a similar C registration Dennis F105 with an AEC AV 470 six cylinder 130 BHP diesel engine, but this was a water tender and had painted bodywork. It was the brigade's second diesel engined appliance after they acquired the 1960 Leyland Firemaster Magirus turntable ladder. It replaced a fourteen year old Commer Whitson water tender, which went to Teesside Airport.
This (NHN 999) had been originally ordered as a type A, but was updated by the 700 gpm pump from their prewar Leyland PE being installed, when that unit was replaced by Dennis F12 PHN 999.
The new Dennis had a five speed gearbox, but the gears were arranged with reverse opposite first gear, which drivers apparently did not really like, as this was opposite to the Dennis and second Commer's layout!
