Curious me here again....

What was the gain, paying money to remove the second rear-axle? Road tax, Driver's Licence Level, etc. ?

Over here, the single rear-axle Fire-Truck requires only the normal car licence(Level 5) plus the 'Air-Brakes Training Module'.

However, with Dual Rear-Axles(Tandem); we are getting into serious truck-driving(lorry driving) territory; involves testing and road-test for a Level 3. Something most Volunteer Fire-fighters don't want to get into....

Level 1 is the 18-wheelers (the articulated trucks[lorries])(tractor-trailers)

I've been doing some research into this interesting water carrier and the third axle was fitted when the vehicle was in fire brigade use. It was first registered in April 1990 that's the same year as Petros took his shot so I'm uncertain if it was a converted milk tanker. My records show that Dairy Crest built the tank so it seems very plausible that it was purchased from the Milk Marketing Board and if that's the situation, it was either re-registered or its milking career was very short-lived. Over to you after 12 years!
