LAS 947P is powered by a Perkins 540 V8, I think they were a standard fitment in Dodges of the period, together with the later G13 which were also Perkins V8 powered
Thanks Paul, I thought so. The Perkins 511 and later 540 V8 engines showed up in a wide variety of fire engines, in addition to Dodge. Dennis, ERF, Ford and Shelvoke all istalled them, to the point where they were pretty much universal in the UK!
I rode and drove these when I joined in 1984 , very stable with wide track and powerfull perkins engine , great little appliance , much loved but to be honest they were very noisey and not at all comfortable with no headroom and the ba sets in a little niche in the middle of the back cab in front of the crew who faced rearwards , the little equipment we carried had plenty of room to be stowed and it was very easy to get in and out of , nice little bit of kit overall
The predecessor to the Perkins V8.540 was the V8.510 (510 cu.in.) OK I'm being pedantic!

Agreed, Peter. I worked in Ford truck division when it was introduced in the D1000, and within Ford Motor Company it was always referred to as the 511, because this was its actual cubic capacity in cubic inches. Sorry if it caused confusion!
