Shelvoke WX/Pilcher Greene RT Essex UTW 423W

1989 Harlow FS open day. Pilcher Greene from Burgess Hill, Sussex bodied just a few larger special appliances, so this is a rare combination. The company specialised in ambulances too. see picture 1626.

I'd love to know what became of the three Shelvoke RT's. They were at Parkside Commercials in Hounslow for a while, then the yard was cleared. I'm particularly interested in the fate of UTW421W which was based at Colchester. I have heard rumour that one was preserved (UTW422W ex-GRAYS)

This looks like a rear-entrance walk-in design. Did it have crew seats in the rear?

They had a two man cab with a side door further down the nearside where the rear cab door would be on a standard pump. The lockers were mirrored on the other side and they had a pair of rear doors with chevron markings. Two roof mounted rotary beacons on the front, plus alternately flashing blue grille repeaters and a roof mounted 'Stem-Lite' with built in floodlights. On the rear were two blue repeaters like the grille ones which flashed together.

Did these replace the (also unique) Essex Firemaster PESTs, or were there another set of ETs on the roster, which replaced the Firemasters and preceded this trio?

I think Essex had Dennis F106 ETs after the Firemaster.

Thanks Ian. I thought there must have been something by way of replacements for the Firemasters before Essex bought these Shelvokes, as by then they would have been pretty ancient.

Of course they did have a fondness for Dennis products, so F106s with the AEC diesel engine or F108s with the Perkins V8 would make sense...

They also had a Land Rover 109 Rescue Tender which ran out of Grays for a while. Could have been late 70's early 80's.

Ian - a lot of LRs were used as rescues, as well as L4Ps, and could be very handy. But an awful lot of brigades overloaded them to the point where they were quite often actually very unstable and more than a little dangerous. There are many examples on this site, along with similarly overloaded Range Rover six wheelers...
