Bedford TJ rescue tender BT KER 708P

Duxford rally 1989. Owned by a Mr Ward of Ipswich. I assume he acquired it from the large British telecom research facility at Martlesham Heath, Ipswich (a former RAF station). It is clearly based on a BT ordinary repair lorry of the time.

I used to drive one of these when I was a telephone engineer with BT, but mine was the usual yellow with blue writing. The three doors in the front of the body above the cab dropped down allowing telephone poles to be carried to work sites. They had a 6 cylinder engine and used to drink petrol like made. Happy days !!

This was actually used as a fire apparatus by British Telecom ?

It is a popular idea over here; for smaller and lower-budgetted Fire Depts. to purchase 2nd-hand such a vehicle; and make it over into a Rescue Truck.
