D 999 TFY was the first Volvo fire tender to enter service in the UK. The Volvo FL 6 tender, the first of four to join the service, was handed over to CFO K.Hayton of Clwyd fire Service at Deeside Fire station by the head of Volvo Trucks (Great Britain) Ltd.The vehicle has the TD61F intercooled 207 bhp engine matched to the Allison MT 643 four speed fully automatic gearbox.
The cab and body was built by Fulton and Wylie in Scotland. The company at the time decided to commission a design and engineering consultant, Dawson Sellarr of Kirkcudbright to develop the new Cab.

Is this still on reserve duty? The last time I seen it was at Alans Skip Hire on Wrexham Ind Est about 4 years ago. She was brought on by a Relief crew from Llandudno. Also only this and E499UTJ new to Denbigh (second built) were on the heavier FL6 16 chassis. She was replaced at Deeside by H72HKC in 1991,moving to St Asaph to replace LJC489R Dennis R130

At present on the run at Prestatyn. Looking very tired now, this appliance should be returned to volvo for preservation.

the bigger volvo 16 ton chassis was actually quite rare and the smaller 12/14 ton chassis were the norm on british fire appliances supplied by volvo , the bigger chassis was better looking and had presence where as the smaller and lower/narrower chassis looked a little lost under the same bodies as these , I worked at a station that had the 16 tonner and they were far superior in accelaration and braking than than the lighter chassis that was until the supercharger model came on stream , boy it could fly and it had a wider stance as well , good fire engines they were but old fashioned now

Station 30 blairgowrie in the now defunct tayside had the only two 18 ton volvo chassis up this neck of the woods and boy could they fly and as said earlier looked reall smart with the tall wide stance , very well proportioned and handled well , great for rural duties as they had good ground clearance and auto chains , they lasted well and have now been replaced by the scania /jdc combo , low slow and yet have a high cab with bad ingress and egress and not particularily reliable yet we buy them in droves , I have no idea why
