Great shot Jacques, a proper ET. I like the fireman sliding down the pole. We still have two poles at York fire station that we still use, but not for much longer we think, as the service is looking at knocking the old station down and building a new one. That will be a very sad day. The existing station is a 2 Pump, 1 ALP and 2 Rescue Boats station. When the new station is built it will become a 1 Pump and a 1 Special station. Some brigades have stopped firefighters using the poles under health and safety rules. Paul.
Hi Gary, its a bit more complex than that Huntington can get a crew most of the time. The brigade are looking at splitting York, but no plans have been made, it could even see a new station built in the south east of the city. Paul.
Proud to let everyone know that the fireman's pole was invented in Chicago - now my home town - in the 1870s by fireman David Kenyon of Engine Co 21.
It became one of the most popular new ideas to be very quickly adopted by virtually every country which has full time firemen living on the upper floor(s) of their fire stations.
This appliance is indeed attached to A23 Euston. There was an ET attached to A21 Paddington during my service there. Some time after I left (circa. 1979) on promotion to A25 Westminster, (now sadly closed), the ET was moved to A23.
Andy was this the ET that was off the run at the time of the Worsley Hotel fire 1974? Paddington has had a FRU for sometime now. You can see one of the new M/B - E-one's on a training blue light run on youtube.
