Nice shot Graham of a dying breed - the large pre-war city station. For those people outside Norfolk, this one is going to be replaced like many others before it.

The plan to replace this old beauty has been rumbling on for years, hasn't it, Chris? Any idea when it will happen? I thought it was scheduled to take place as soon as the new station at New Earlham was open. And I think that has been open for a few years now.
PS, I love these old type stations. And in this age of glass and steel (and with the exception of one or two per Brigade), I think London's the only place where you can still see them in numbers now. In this country any way.
Hi Yelp, North Earlham wasn't intended to replace Norwich City although it did initialy become home to the ALP and ET from there. The ET has since returned to the city. Another new station is to be built to replace this grand old lady and that I believe should be open in the next couple of years.

Thanks, Chris. Forgive me; I wasn't implying that North Earlham was built to replace the station in Norwich city centre. But I did think its building would facilitate the building of the city centre's replacement station being as it would be bulit a couple of miles to the east of its current location, and not in the city centre, thus maintaining standards of fire cover within the city centre.
This grand old station closed today, the 24th August 2011 having served the city of Norwich since 1934. The last two appliances operational here, Scania Heavy Rescue Pump, KX10 DMO and Mercedes Technical Rescue Unit, L164 RVG have moved to the new Carrow Fire Station in the south of the city. One more of the dying breed consigned to the history books.
