Nice picture Graham. L728 TNG,started its early days based at Gorleston. It's been a reserve off and on for awhile now, mind you though it was at Dereham for good while.. I suppose the LN's are starting to withdraw from service, as same as the SK's have, almost gone?

Andrew, I noticed you used the description 'SK' on another of your comments and this appliance which I know as an 1124, you refer to as an 'LN' - I am not familiar with these terms so could you enlighten me please?

Okay then Chris. The SK range featured a more curved cab, but LN2 range, had more of a square out line, get what I mean? Mind you, someone will correct me if i'm wrong...

Thanks for your reply Andrew. I understand the differences but have only ever known them as 1222's and 1124's. I wonder what 'SK' and 'LN' actually stand for? Perhaps one of our European correspondants might know.

Not too sure on that Chris? The LN2 was the most popular with the brigades. Somerset and amongst others had a few SK,type. Newquay in Cornwall still has 1997/P138 PCV/SK 1827F/ALP..Think it's the last year they were built in that series? Going back to the LN range, the newest Í've seen is YJ51 AWA.

L729TNG was Dereham's orginal Pump Tender but suffered a gear box failure around 1997, so L728TNG as a spare was sent in to replace it. Rather than the hassle of changing them back over the workshops decided to leave it at Dereham and L729TNG became the spare. It remained at Dereham until 2008 when it was replaced by Scania P270 Reg AO57GXP. Meanwhile our other Merc' 1124 Saxon P738ONG which came to Dereham in 1997 from Norwich City (now moved to Carrow) was replaced in 2004 by a Scannia 64D Reg AU04KUW as part of Norfolk's role out of sixteen designated Rescue Pumps with Enhanced Rescue Equipment. This appliance (now moved to Cromer) has now been replaced by Scannia AV63HZL.

Hi Chris! SK stands for Schwere Kipper, in english it's Heavy Tipper. The generation of trucks after that is the Actros range of vehicle!

Thank you Anders. I didn't expect an answer 5 years on!

Well, half an answer, hey Chris?!!

Just to correct a point Dereham's latest Scania is AV63KZL not as shown in my previous post. Norfolk are now withdrawing all there last remaining Merc's it would seem, although Merc 1124 (LN) Reg P739 ONG ex Sandringham is still officially in Norfolk's reserve fleet but on semi loan to the Dereham based USAR (Urban Search & Rescue) team. This is a directly government funded Nation Special Rescue team, and they are using it as an Operational Support Unit until they buy a replacement unit for there old one, which became beyond economic repair. USAR although run by Norfolk are run by the county as part of the IK government's New Dimensions scheme to set up a chain of specialist national resilience teams to deal with New York 9/11 style emergency.

These Ecoliner 12 tonne GVW trucks were replaced by Mercedes by the Atego range, from 9 to 16 tonnes GVW.

The Actros was a heavier chassis, from 16 tonnes up, with more powerful engine options. The Axor truck range fell between them, and was primarily marketed as a lighter-duty less costly alternative to the Actros.

All were used for various fire appliance applications and still are, in numerous countries.

Other very popular Benz chassis include the now-discontinued 5 to 8 tonne Vario, the lighter weight Sprinter and G Wagen, the Econic and of course the unbreakable Unimogs.
