I knew that several Land Rovers were not red - white, grey/green, yellow occuring at various times on various machines, but does anyone know why? (OK yellow makes sense in early 70s as this was the brigade colour), but grey/green seems odd. I have seen a later picture of this appliance in Red. Any info gratefully received. Jon.

Hi Jon, During the very early sixties, West Sussex Fire Brigade commenced by starting to build within their Workshops nine mark two 109 wheelbase Land Rovers over an eight year period. These were purchased in ones and twos and fitted out as hose reel tenders complete with light portable pump, and seventy gallon water tank. the first five were supplied in civilian livery of fergusion grey with county cream wheels on completion the brigade had the front quarter wings grill insert, painted fire engine red, this was also done at the rear on the wings. a Winkworth electric bell was fitted to the front bumper and an Lucas acorn blue light to the cab roof. In 1963 the specification was revised overhead gantrys were fitted with an all alloy triple extension ladder french style two tone horns, and the suction for the portable pump revised from the bonnet to the gantry most important the livery went to total grey. The previous Land Rovers built were then up-dated on major overhauls. at this point these Land Rovers became known as Land Rover Ladders the modifications were done to enable these appliances to attend chimney fires without the support of a front-line appliance. The grey livery was kept in place because of two reasons one/it was not a front-line appliance and two/the workshops were on a strict budget with no internal paint shop facilities.Grey was choosen as it was thought to be a neutral colour. By 1970 this situation had changed and many of the Land Rovers were looking tired with years of wear and tear. so they were refinished in ICI Coventry Fire Brigade Yellow only two ever got done when the scheme was halted. In the early eightees one of these, was repainted red, having gone from Grey to Yellow and then red (995 LPX) Chichester. so you in 1979 ended up with two in yellow two in red five still in grey of which two further of these went red before they were withdrawn from service. During this period of the Brigades life it became somewhat a "Rainbow" brigade. Hope you find these comments of interest.
