Line Up at Grimsby Fire Station

On the right of this picture is the rarely seen and never (as yet) operational Mercedes Econic / Hilton Access/ TVAC CARP ordered by Humberside Fire and Rescue Service along with four more for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service this was the first of an order of two for Humberside (the second was subsequently cancelled when the weight issue arose) it was planned to replace a Water Tender Ladder and the Scania HP in this picture, thereby saving two wholetime posts per watch ~(8 in total) - this is an '07 registered vehicle and as I said never as yet; - 23rd January 2010 operational! (for our overseas friends we are now on the '59 series of registrations) the CFO of Humberside was insistent that this appliance would be on the run on 1st January 2008 - it did'nt happen. South Yorkshires are not on the run either and the purchase price of these vehicles was in the region of £520,000 each - before additional funding was spent to attempt to correct the faults - they have a proposed life span of 15 years !

If you are interested BBC local TV (Yorkshire and Lincolnshire) have a programme called 'Inside Out' (it is also available on the BBC iplayer) they intend to feature these appliances on the 25th January programme and the absolute wate of money they are !

That's a great picture Rick and one which will probably be even more significant in years to come depending on how things work out with the CARP.
Because of the local topography, some of us down here in Norfolk have to make do with BBC North but it has a plus side on this occassion and should make interesting viewing.

Chris, its nice to know that you guys down in Norfolk are getting the benefit of BBC North - it also means you can follow Scunthorpe United no doubt !

The programme should make interesting viewing I think ?

So this new MB "Quint" on the far right is too heavy for roads? It doesn't look any bigger than some of the other apparatus I've seen in the UK.

Thats probably what the Chief said when he ordered it ! It weighs 26 tonnes which is the max legal weight for a rigid vehicle on UK roads, - the problem is its near that weight before they fill it with equipment , water, foam and firefighters !

Hi, Rick. What's the Merc Atego on the left? Is it a pump? I may seem a little surprised because I didn't realise Humberside had any Ategos. I thought they were a Rapier, Scania and MAN brigade.

Yelp,

its one of three ESU's in the brigade carrying bulk foam, welfare facilities, fireground main decontamination (not mass)etc.

One is at Grimsby, one at east Hull and one is a spare but used by ladder workshops as their GP Lorry when not required.

They are six wheelers with a remotely operated hiab crane at the rear.

Thanks for that, Rick. It seems that Humberside's fleet is becoming quite an ecclectic mix. The Buckinghamshire of the north-east, perhaps...

Mmm thats a thought ! Basically as the Rapiers are phased out (and thats such a shame as they are superb appliances and the best I ever drove) it will become a predominantly Scania brigade (and they are horrible compared to the Rapier) with one or two exceptions in the special appliance section and a couple of 'compact' appliances MAN - nothing but trouble and, an Iveco I'm told at Epworth however as I'm now retired from the brigade I've not seen it !
