Bedford J/ low profile WrT Suffolk JRT 832D

1988 Duxford rally. The Suffolk town of Needham Market has a very low railway bridge so needs modified appliances, several of which appear on this site. Rare to see a Bedford J with a mid mounted pump?

I remember this when it was the reserve appliance at Needham Market, we knew it affectionately as "the pig". The gear stick came through into the crew cab, and you could kick it out of gear and really annoy the driver...

Very unusual having the hosereels in a front Locker instead of rear or middle?

It was where the pump was also situated. Ergonomic nightmare for the pump operator. This vehicle was also based as the second appliance at Stowmarket for a while as "alpha 7-9"

Could this be the only J series with a mid mounted pump installation?

Any reason for the blue beacon to be fitted so low?

Andy - this unit was specially designed to be low profile, so the light was on the front of the cab and the ladders were recessed into the cab roof too.
