This appliance is now owned and maintained by Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service for use on occasions such as brigade funerals. It is no longer at Bressingham being housed instead where there happens to be a spare bay.

Just curious - is that a quadrant-like device, at foot of the Ladder, for side-ways correcting it to the vertical, when raised ?

Great to see it preserved, and run, by its Fire Dept.

Yes Pat...its the 'plumbing' mechanism. A suspended metal ball detects the vertical and causes the automatic plumbing to activate. Very clever...the wheels on the end spin round constantly keeping the ladder in the correct plane.
Nowadays we have computers to do the job on modern aerials....thats why they spend months off the run and often have to be returned to their manufacturers in foreign countries....NO ! I am not starting the CARP argument again!

Yes it plumbs automatically by mercury switches and it alters the ladder head 8 degrees in each direction

This TL was bought new by the City of Norwich Fire Brigade (later amalgamated into Norfolk Fire Service) in 1962 and operated from Bethel Street station in Norwich for 21 years. It then went on a short-term loan to Cambridge before returning to NFS. It is still used for occasional "ceremonial" duties and has participated in past Norwich Lord Mayor's procession. It may be seen out at some classic car rallies this summer supporting Community Fire Safety activity. The next CFS outing will be to the Norfolk Sea Scouts Classic Car Show at Hoveton, Norfolk on Sun. 24 July 2011.
