Dennis 'N' Type and Dennis Mower racingI hope I may be excused for submitting this picture to a fire engine site. However it does show the diversity of the Dennis company famous for making fire engines. The picture was taken at the Dennis centernary celebrations (100 years) at Wroughton airfield. You were able to lap the airfield (driving youself) in any of their products from buses and coaches, refuse wagons and of course their fire engines. Naturally the queue for the Rapiers was the longest! You were encouraged to drive the Rapier as fast as you dare and if the tyres were not screaming round the corners you just weren't going fast enough. There were times allowed for more sedate laps of the airfield and that is the time the vintage machines went out and the brave man shown above lapping on his Dennis lawnmower. It was the most memorable weekend and something that we will never see the likes of again.

Your Action Shot shows just how the crew had to hang on, aboard those old rigs.
And a beautiful restoration job on the Lawn Mower, too - right down to the "By Appointment to....." crest.
Over here, a lawn mower is definitely part of the Fire Hall equipment - both, for public appearance; and to keep the grass from growing into a hay-field, which when dry, is a fire-risk.
More than one Fire Hall [usually unattended, if a Volunteer Service] has been lost to a grass-fire. And very embarassing to the members, too; as The Press always love a news story about a Fire Department it-self, burning down.....
