Dennis F103 emergency tender London VYE 235

1985 Duxford rally. Dates from 1959. At the time it was owned by Steve Holmes an employee of the Ruislip workshops, London FB, and was often seen at rallies. DU 2 is I think not a true fleet number but means Display Unit 2. I will post another picture with a DU plate shortly. LFB must have sanctioned these as they are in the official form, presumably made for Steve in workshops.

This 1959 Dennis F103 Emergency Tender was delivered new to the London Fire Brigade and was allocated to what was then,D61 Lambeth Fire Station back in the old LCC days. The original fleet number of this appliance was 6 ET.The appliance remained on the LFB Fleet List until going out of service in 1979 and into preservation and was used for F.S.N.B.F.(Fire Services National Benevolant Fund),now-'Fire Brigades Charities'in fund raising.

Now at Lee Green fire station undergoing restoration.
Used to have a fantastic display of models in the rear if my memory serves me correctly.

Not at Duxford of course but Twickenham rugby ground Deltafire 1986. Sorry about the mis-label.

London had two types of ET at this time. A type and B type. This is the A type, main difference is that it was fitted with an electric generator to power rescue equipment. When I was posted to E22 Greenwich in 1966 from training school we had a B type with a crew 6 I think with a leading fireman in charge.

This was the first vehicle I drove operationally at B22 Lambeth after passing out as a driver aged just 21 and being posted from B26 Old Kent Road. It was a fantastic vehicle and I recall many incidents we attended with it. I saw it again at Duxford which brought back many memories.

I presume this beauty is based on the Dennis 101 chassis ...a much undertated vehicle, which I understand were fitted with a Rolls Royce diesel engine great shot by the way

I remember an article in a firefighting specialty magazine at the time that it had a Perkins six cylinder, which was much smaller and less powerful than the 12 liter RR engine in the F101, in which case it must have been very slow! Does anyone know or remember how this generation of LCC Dennis trucks was powered?

I'm sure this ET has an AEC diesel. The first London ET with a Perkins would have been ET12, a 1970 Dennis F108.

ET12 being BLO801H, now FYY37H? The preserved Dennis F108 ET with most definately a Perkins engine. Have to agree about the AEC engine Kyle also. ET12 (ET12A) was first ET on scene at Moorgate tube disaster.

That's the one Gary. As far as I am aware the first London machine with a Perkins would have been P344 SMH344F the prototype F109 Pump. All F106's before that had the AEC 505 diesel and all F108's, F109's after had the Perkins V8 510. In fact all London ERF's, Shelvokes, Dennis SS131's and the Dodge CFE, HCB Angus, Locomotors and Saxon appliances had the Perkins in some shape or form.

This appliance has a rather rare Dennis badged straight 6 engine fitted, possibly Meadows related, but definitely not an AEC unit like the 1961 manufactured Dennis ETs. I've some got pictures of it at home with information, will post when I eventually get there...

As I mentioned, my understanding is that this unit was powered by a Perkins 6-354 six cylinder diesel, which was of course also used in later series Dennis fire engine chassis. I believe London decided to stndardize on diesel power as early as 1950, when they bought their first AEC Regent chassised dual purpose appliances.
