Somerset Dodge on a shoutThis picture was taken by Lester Solway and is reproduced with his permission. It shows the Dodge K1113 Water Tender Ladder which was the second away at Wells arriving at the Mendip Hospital,Wells on an another alarms activating call. The entrance to the hospital is on the right of the photo hence why the driver is cutting across the junction. Before it closed, Wells frequently were callled out to the hospital sometimes 5 or 6 times a day. The fire station in Princes Road, Wells was at the other end of town and it was great to hear the pair of Dodges as they worked their way from one end of Wells to the other, through the narrow streets with two tones sounding and the perkins roaring.

On the one occasion there was an actual fire at the hospital, it was in a dustbin and the AFA system did not go off!
Because there was never a fire, the local brigade soon learned to send only one pump with a maximum of four crew and instructions not to break any necks getting there!
