Somerset Dodge's K1113

These photos were taken by Lester Solway and are reproduced with his permission. They show the pair of Dodge K1113/Perkins with bodywork by CFE (Cheshire Fire Engineering) shortly after that had been placed on the run from new in 1978 at the City of Wells Fire Station. They remained in service at Wells until October 1992 and wre part of a batch of three, the other machine CYB12S was stationed at Porlock all its life. Beautiful machines with a sound of their own. Wells won them in a skittle match but thats another story.

We need to know the story of the skittle match. We do not get these too often on this website!

Hello Rob the skittles match story is in 1978 Somerset Fire Brigade bought three new Dodge appliances with bodywork by HCB Angus. They were duly allocated to Wiveliscombe, Glastonbury and Wells. Glastonbury and Wells were two pump stations at the time so they replaced the first away WRT's which were both 1961 Dennis F28's registration 24LYD and 25LYD. So for a period the Dodges ran alongside the second away WRL which were also Dennis F28's registration 353MYA and 22FYD. Later the same year the brigade took delivery of another three new Dodge appliances but with bodywork by Cheshire Fire Engineering which had a more open cab between the front and rear and were viewed as better appliances. These were allocated to Porlock, Wells and Glastonbury however the brigade workshops wanted to keep the Dodges with the same bodywork together on the same station i.e either both at Wells or Glastonbury. This meant one station would get the two new CFE bodied appliances and the other a second hand HCB Angus bodied appliance to go alongside the other one. After much debate it was decided the decision would be made on the result of a skittles match. The rest is history, Wells won by a very narrow margin and got the two new appliances and their HCB Angus bodied appliance went to Glastonbury alongside the other one.
