Ford D1000/Locomotors HLL DLK 10J London

1982 outside F21 Stratford it was covering as a spare for the Dennis F109 hose laying lorry (HLL). This Ford was converted to 4x4 use by Vickers, hence the normal headlights are blanked and a lower set put into bumper. Can't have been too stable at speed - here it had just turned out. Locomotors bodied a number of appliances over the years including some later demountable bodies for London, and even pumping appliances for other brigades - see #18097.

Sure that locomotors bodied a number of dodge pumps for LFB too.

During the 1980's and into the late 1990's period before the arrival of the first of the Volvo's in 1989,the London Fire Brigade as well as Dennis did operated a very large fleet of Dodge pumping appliances. The Dodge/CFE,Dodge/HCB-Angus,and then the later Dodge G13/Locomotors pumping appliance were all in use by the LFB.
With an order for 34 Volvo FL14/Saxon Sanbec pumping appliances for the brigade, plus other appliances at the time by Volvo,by 1992,52 Volvo appliances were on the run in the Capitol and the Dennis and Dodge appliances were slowly done away with.

LFB operated tons of Transits and Ford cars at the time, but this D series must have been one of very few. I believe there were two Ford Willowbrook BA tenders (which were never actually on the run)and of course the Salvage Corps had a few Fords, but I can't think of any others in service in London.

Can anyone explain why the LFB wanted a 4X4 hose layer? Apart from Hampstead Heath, I can't think f anywhere they would need a 4X4...

This was originally allocated to D27 Heston for the PDA at Heathrow Airport. London also had a Ford D series Foam Tender at D27 see photo #22656

Heathrow Airport. This went new to the 'D' Division.

4x4 for Heathrow responses, hence the all wheel drive hose layer. (source Nadal book on London fire appliances. There were also Ford D series /Hawson Chemical Incident units. See picture 20693.

Thanks, gentlemen.

I wonder if it was ever deployed where its 4X4 capabilities were put to the test?

Ford did build some much earlier Trader 4X4 trucks for the army (with a Commer cab!) but the D series was really never designed to be converted to a 4X4. Because of its very low mounted engine and transmission the center of gravity went way up, and I imagine stability must have been quite a problem...

Thanks also for reminding me about the D1617 foam pumper. This too, was after I left Ford Truck Division to work for Volvo, and - like the hose wagon - it was a one-off.

After the D1317 was introduced, brigades switched from the D1617 unless they needed the extra payload - and of course the foam pumper was one unit which did, because of its extra large tank capacity.

I have just discovered the history of Locomotors. It was founded in 1946 in NW England as a spin off from the Hovis bread company to paint the vehicles of Hovis delivery partners. It later moved to Andover and was a vehicle bodybuilder. It closed I believe in 2018 according to press reports.
