Bedford S Haydon WrT Cambridge

At workshops rear yard of Cambridge 1975. Note the new lettering on an old machine, and roof access ladder just behind the cab. This 4x2 appliance is similar to those bought by Birmingham - Haydon was a midlands coachbuilder. It has very pleasing lines.

Petros. Thank you very much for sharing these classic photos with us.

THis little pump used to make almost daily runs to Addenbrookes Hospital in 1964, when I lived next door to the new Fire Station on Parker's Piece.

Why? Because the hospital had installed one of the first automatic fire alarm systems, which of course went off practically every day. At first, the brigade sent a full first alarm assignment, then learned very quickly to limit the response to this Bedford pump with a fiur man crew. It may have also occasionally gone to a few fires!

In the '60 s, David Haydon Ltd were also the UK concessionaires for MAGIRUS Turntable ladders.

this is mislabelled I realise. This is Wilsdon bodywork not Haydon.

The rear bodywork was apparently designed so that these could if necessary carry a wheeled escape, although I do not know if this particular example ever did. At the time Cambridge had a Dennis F12 PE, an F17 Metz TL and an F8 with a 45 foot Merryweather alloy ladder, so this Bedford did not need to carry anything bigger than its standard ladder, which is illustrated in this photo...

Strictly speaking, this was not a water tender, as this series of Wilsdon Bedfords were designed to carry a 50 foot wooden escape ladder if called on to do so, and had a 100 gallon water tank.
