Dennis R series WrL LJC 487R Clwyd

Taken at Wrexham workshops in 1976 before fitting out, I believe this may have been one of the first R series off the production line. The bell is a nice touch - they were dropped soon after. Is that a Rolls Royce engine symbol on the front?

This served at Wrexham and then was transferred to E9 Mold to replace GDM81K there. It was replaced there in 1989 by F888AKC Volvo/Fulton&Wylie.Im not sure what happened to it then but it was not in reserve in 1991 like most petrol R types were. Lovely picture of a classic Clwyd Dennis,Bedford TJ/HCB Angus OUN177G next to it too.

Beautiful machine, by far the nicest looking of all the dennis Fire appliance models I think.

They were Michael, they made you proud to be seen in them. And in the case of the Rolls Royce petrol engined ones like LJC heard in them too!

Fitted with an Allison automatic gearbox

Really? - you had the Allison Automatic Transmissions(Gear-box), way back then....

They have only been showing up in our area, in the past decade or so.

Actually it was a Morse Self Changing Gears box (which I beleive was built under licence) possibly an Allison licence. Eitherway you could use it semi-automatic with the dashboard gearshift lever. RJC918T was the the delivered to Clwyd with a Dash Leverchange supposededly exported prior to xmas to Netherlands (perhaps editors could help?). LJC487R spent most of her life at E9 Mold(Ret) after Wrexham,Most of it with a black painted bumper, which at least LJC489T out of the batch also carried.

Does anyone have info on any hereford and worcester fire brigade R series. I remember them having a few of these lovely machines. They were T reg i think, but were fitted with perkins V8 diesel with the auto box.

Weren't the B-reg Dodge's the last to have bells?

Added by Adey on 12 September 2010.
The last appliance was C256SJC the third and final Dodge/Fulton&Wylie which served at Corwen (then Station E5).It was withdrawn after suffering damage in a rollover accident on 14.2.1996. It turned over on the A5104 at Pontybodkin whilst en route to a firecall in Treuddyn, it was running as a spare at Mold (then E9) whilst their Volvo was away for repair.

I always thought the grille on this series looked like an afterthought, resembling nothing more than a piece of leftover metal fencing, or perhaps a farm gate? Of course I know all fire trucks are there to do a job, not to look elegant, but its no excuse to bring out the ugly stick...

ED: there was a matt black version as well
