Ford D Carmichael ex Merionethshire OFF 938L

Merioneth, a tiny Welsh brigade, became part of Clwyd in 1975. In the background is one of their Land Rovers used at the Cynwyd mountain fire to ferry crews from their appliances parked in the village up to the fire front on the remote mountain in the Berwyns range.
The village of Cynwyd is now famously the home of Ifor Williams Trailers, beloved of farmers and utility companies.

Well done Petros. Remember the Ford very well. The Land Rover was BFF747B and ended her days at Caernarfon Airfield as a GPV. Her twin sister BFF746B went to Tywyn and was re-registered to BEY746B in 1988 and was preserved in the Long Eaton area of Derbyshire

The Ford does not seem to have any warning lights.

Where was this Ford based? Also what body did it carry,it looks pretty distinctive and a bit like the old Miles bodies.

Bob, there is a tiny beacon next to the Two Tones.

So there is,it can't have been much use i think.

Dont think it was much use as I have seen a photo of her with this,a larger beacon on front of ladder gantry AND twin dash repeaters,Taken when at Wrexham a number of years later. Guess they changed ideas on visibility by then.

The Merioneth Fire did not join the Clwyd Fire Service. It amalgamated with Caernavonsire and Anglesey Fire Dept to form Gasanaeth Tan Gwynedd

See picture 21014 for this machine in later life.

Alun,Corwen was the only Merioneth station to pass to Clwyd in 1974.OFF939L must by a process of elimination have been the WrL there at the time.See photo #21014 of her in her later life. Also the Land Rover behind is BFF746B not 747B. This is the Landy shown in Corwen Floods photos in early 60's on BBC Wales website. Featuring future Corwen Sub/O Nigel"The Milk"Roberts as a child being rescued from flooded home at rear of the(then)Corwen Fire Station. Also a pic of the flooded station on there.

Well folks, looks like I mixed up my Land Rovers here. Even exprets can get it wrong. BFF746B was allocated to Corwen in 1964 and BFF747B was allocated to Tywyn in 1964. Anyway, Ford D1014/Carmichael was allocated to Corwen in 1972 and replaced Bedford S/HCB WrT AFF 556. Corwen was the main town in the Edeyrnion Rural district of Meirionethshire. The 464 Ladder was added about 1976 when she went under some modifications to the blue light and ladder gantry was fitted. Reallocated to Wrexham retained in 1985 when Wrexham recieved Dodge G13/F+W WrL B36 OJC.

What replaced the Ford at Corwen Andy? Did they have a Dennis at one time between the Ford and The C reg Dodge/F&W?

Forgot to add. When Wrexham recieved B36 OJC in 1985, Dennis R131/Dennis WrL RJC916T was reallocated to Corwen. RJC916T was again reallocated to Abergele to replace Dennis R31/Dennis WrL LJC488R when Corwen recieved Dodge G13/F+W WrL C256SJC in 1986. Unfortunately C256SJC was rolled in February 1996 when she was a spare appliance operating from Mold. Secumbed to black ice in Pontybodkin whilst enroute to an incident. All crew were ok.

Valentines morning 1996,T.O.C 12.36am if I remember correctly! She skidded and rolled on the bend by the Bowling Green in Pontybodkin and slid on her side until the kerb stopped her. She was replacing Mold's Volvo/F&W F888AKC Which had its roof and triple ex ladders ripped off by same driver a week previous. Morreys of Chester recovered it,took it to Mold, all kit was removed and it was taken away.It did spend some time in a Garage yard near Crewe, and was stripped of her Perkins and other Dodge spares. After the ladder incident F888AKC became the first Volvo to carry a folding Roof ladder and gantry for this and triple ex,a la Merc style at the time, which she still carries.
