Dennis D Jag Herstmonceux.

This was taken at the end of the 80's at Rye when running as a spare. It had to be kept outside as it wouldn't fit into the low bays at Rye. It was first issued to Herstmonceux in 1975 being 1 of a batch of 4.It was replaced by a Bedford TKG D458 XAP being the last Bedford pump to bought by East Sussex. This Dennis was last seen by me on a travellers camp on the A28 outside Chilhan in Kent looking a little tired but all there apart from the windscreen and was for sale,at £600.00 a little to much. It has since gone I would love to know where it is now if any one could help?

It was stood in a farm yard in Goodnestone, Kent up until last year, still with the windscreen missing, but has since disappeared.

the sister appliance to this one RPN 824N was based at barcombe.

I bought RPN 824N back in 1990 from East Sussex for around £ 750. The idea was to show her but like most things it fell by the wayside. She remained in storage near Chichester until 2000.

Does anyone have any idea how many of the East Sussex D series Dennis might still survive?

Added by Michael G on 28 September 2012.
I only have two D series (out of 20) surviving
RPN 822 N and BNJ 872 K. If there is others I would appreciate details please.

So if RPN823N was at Hurstmonceux and RPN824N was at Barcombe where were the other two of the batch stationed?

RPN 821N Dennis D Jag/Dennis, Eastbourne and Battle.
RPN 822N Dennis D Jag/Dennis, Burwash.
RPN 823N Dennis D Jag/Dennis, Hurstmonceux.
RPN 824N Dennis D Jag/Dennis, Barcombe.

These are the 4 N reg and there stations.Another Dennis J that is in preservation is EPM 85K which served at Battle , Crowborough and Broad Oak. I think it may be at RAF Scampton, it belongs to a serving armed forces member and is part of a museum collection at this base and RAF Manston.

Does anyone know where RPN 824N is or if it's still in one piece.

RPN 824N was stored at Siddlesham near Chichester until 2000 and taken to Sullivans scrap yard in Chichester....don't know if it's still together. Have photos when owned in 80's.

The D series was an excellent compact design, but seriously compromised in the earlier petrol versions by the awfully unreliable Jaguar 4.2 litre six cylinder engine. This was installed by Dennis as a cost saving measure compared to its predecessor's B60 Rolls power unit. Dennis eventually switched back to Rolls, and also offered the Perkins 6-354 diesel, both of which were a much better choice. I have heard that some brigades actually had their appliances' existing Jaguar engines switched out too, but this may not be accurate....
