This vehicle is just an Officers vehicle and would respond with the Technical Rescue Unit which comprises of many vehicles for special rescue/collapse/entrapment/major road/rail/aircrash incidents, etc. The TRU are a specialist rescue team with so many crew members on call 24hrs a day with its main base being located at Horley Fire Station. In actual fact, four members based with the Technical Rescue Unit at Horley formed part of a 60-strong UK international search and rescue(ISAR)team, which flew from Gatwick to the Agus Salim area of Sumatra following the recent earthquake. These teams have since returned to the UK,the focus of the earthquake response having now switched to providing just humanitarian aid.

The Ford Focus Estate cars allocated to the Technical rescue unit at Horley, as Pete says, are used to transport members of the team, who are also on call outside normal hours (a subtle variation on day manning/variable crewing), but do carry some kit - i.e Line rescue equipment, vibraphones, snake eye camera etc. I understand that the officers can chose which bits of equipment to carry when on call on a "best quess basis for likely calls -i.e wet suits and inflatable rescue paths at times of expected flooding. It is quite flexible & quite impressive compared with what brigades had only a few years ago before "New dimensions". The TRU officers can then respond as a back up to normal PDAs to difficult or unusual rescues/RTCs etc where their extra training/equipment can come in useful. Jon.
