Chris, these appliances might seem odd looking appliances to you,but the London Fire Brigade actually had on their fleet around about 1980,48 of these CFE/Shelvoke & Drewry WX Dual Purpose Pumps. This picture shows one from 1979,and in actual fact, several went into preservation having been retired from active service and can still today be seen at rallies and shows in the UK.

I agree - quite the contrast of the modern, boxy, truck; yet cut away for the old-fashioned carriage wheels and wooden ladder of the Escape.
See #40095 & #40096 of YHV 187T taken last Summer, the second photo shows the current ladders quite clearly.

Cracking looking machine. Nothing odd about it in my mind. A wheeled escape on an '80s appliance, yes, a bit unusual, but not in London it wasn't. I love to see a wheeled escape ladder. It reminds me of what a fire engine looked like when I was a kid. Great photo.
