The fires being fanned by very strong winds. There were two, 10 pump fire and an 11 pump fire with some very strange and long distance cover moves. Hi John. Not got many details at the moment, but will let you know when i get them. The only bits of info, York, Selby and Acomb pumps went to Scarborough then redirected onto various fire on the Moors. Two Bridlington (Humberside) pumps in Scarborough on stand by and were very busy all afternoon in that area. A pump from Durham on stand by at Richmond. The 11 pump fire was 4 from North Yorkshire and 7 from Cleveland. Reeth sent to Helmsley on stand by then onto Malton and eventually on to one of the fire on the Moors.

Hi Paul. Rather neat, seeing an "Urban" Fire Engine, parked on a dirt road, in the forest.

What do you guys call this type of fire ?..... elsewhere, there is Forest Fire, Grass Fire, Brush Fire, Bush Fire, Wildland Fire, Wildland Interface Fire (threatening, or, in amongst communities), Moors Fire, Heath Fire, & etc....

Regards, from Canada,

Thanks Paul, sounds like the lads were run off their feet! If ever there was an argument for some half decent basic pumps manned by trained volunteers its a time like this!

Hi Pat. On the print out sheet with the details of this incident it stated fire in woods, we would call it a woodland fire or just fire in a wood. Access to this job was great, from the main road we travelled on tarmac through a Golf course and onto land owned by the Forestry Commission, these roads were just dirt and stone. The fire was located about 25 yards from the track the pump is parked on so we could get a hose reel on it and quickly put it out. We had another fire in a different wood on following day but had to walk over a mile on foot to reach it. Luckily it had not spread to far, we got that one out by digging, turning over and chopping away with a good old axe.

Hi John. Yes it was a very busy weekend, lucky in one way that all the big fires were in the same area. Extra Control room staff had to called in to the Control room to help as well as some crewing the Control Unit out at one of the jobs. Some of the retained and volunteers worked very long hours over the weekend. The litle 4x4 Mercedes pumps were well used as well as a number of Land Rovers and the brigade Scott Track. I think both Harrogate and Richmond had their High Volume Pumping units out too.Paul.

Thanks Paul, the Mercs proved themselves? Good, hope people noticed the absence of a certain van! Is it still off the run?

Added by John Stott on 08 October 2009.
The van is still off the run, not to return hopefully. Malton retained got their 4x4 Merc back when they knocked the van off. A good job too as they were in the thick of it at the Moors.
