I love the unusual rear steps to get into the cage, gives the truck some character

That isn't the cage at the rear - its the safety rails around the 'turret' you can clearly see the base of the ladder and the turntable platform and the ram just to the left of what I'm guessing is the operators console confirms this.

Ahh so it is, sorry just realised its a ladder truck.

Correct. This is a short wheelbase 75 foot quint, often used in suburban areas to fill the roles of both ladder truck and pumper.

It has a single rear axle, only one set of stabilizer jacks and no aerial platform. These usually have a 1500 gpm pump and a 400 or 500 gallon tank, CAFS and class B foam - and carry a few extra ground ladders. One reason for their popularity is that they usually have a smaller crew than if the fire station had a separate pumper and ladder truck, not to mention that they cost a lot less to buy and to operate.
