Surrey Dennis RS at Worthing West Sussex

An unusual sight at Worthings open day in July 1994. West Sussex aquired ex Surrey Fire Brigade 1983 Dennis RS YPA 550Y to serve as the Brigade Training Center appliance at Worthing after two Dennis R130 appliances - TCR 350T & TCR 353T were written off in RTCs in April and August 1993. Dennis R LOW 307R was allocated to the training center but after the two appliances were written off it moved to the depleted reserve fleet and was replaced by this Surrey RS. YPA 550Y was replaced in 1994,by Dennis R133 TCR 351T and was then sold into preservation where it was enhanced with new blue lights and much stripping. Not quite sure where it is today?
Can anyone advise were it was stationed durings it's service with Surrey

Hi Jon, you mentionned that this RS was sold in to preservation. I re-call an ex Surrey RS as you described that I think was with Fire Aid International and was used to promote their cause. Not having seen it for a while, I assume it went out to serve with a worthwhile cause. I'd be interested to know if any of the other ex Surrey RS's still survive, the only other one I knew of I believe was in use as a fire limo in (I think) Scotland.

The one that Fire Aid International had was an ex-Surrey Fire Brigade Dennis RS with the registation-YPA547Y and this originally served at Epsom Fire Station.

John, Yes YPA 550Y may well have been purchased for Fire Aid International - i never saw it again after West Sussex sold it, but have seen a picture of it "jazzed up" with light bar, strobe lights & hi-visibility stripes, it's also featured on a Classic Fire appliance video i was lent, in a cavalcade of appliances in the late 90s, but other than that i've no further details. Jon,I found it?.This Dennis RS133 WrL(YPA550Y)originally with the Surrey Fire Brigade was first allocated to Egham, then Guildford and then went into the reserve fleet. On going out of service,it was one of a batch purchased by the London Country Bus Company for their ill-fated"Poland Project".The company wanted to convert a number of RS's to left hand drive for use in Poland. The actual scheme fell apart, and only one appliance was ever sent to Eastern Europe.
West Sussex acquired this appliance from the mentioned above company but it was only used at the training centre I beleave, and actually was with West Sussex for only a very short period of time before being taken to the Blackbush Auctions and was purchased by preservationist Andrew Tansley of Lamberhurst near Tunbridge Wells in Kent.
For a couple of years its believed to have been with a company in Kidderminster that used it to test dry-risers having made afew alterations to the tank and pump whilst in their service. It was then finally purchased by Sharp-Fire of Cannock in Staffordshire who are a company that specialises in providing fire cover at shows and events throughout the UK to add to there fleet.I don't know if today this appliance is still with Sharp-Fire of Cannock in Staffordshire,or once again gone into private ownership.Pete.

Having a look on the DVLA website YPA 550Y was due it's road tax in 2008 so there is a good chance it still exists, YPA 547Y is currently still taxed - so perhaps has not left the country. Good news if you are both a Dennis and Surrey fan like me.
