Front-mounted pumps are great for the rural areas - easy to sort out and operate. And for "spotting" at the fire-scene.
Just don't run into anything enroute though, as the first thing you will lose is your pump.

Another advantage is that the pump takes up no space in the rear bodywork. This can be a big plus factor with a vehicle like this Land Rover, which does not have space for much in the way of water, hose, equipment or even crew members.

As well as the risk of damage, the other downside is the extra weight on the front wheels, which tends to make the steering heavy and encourage a bit of additional understeer.
