Pompier Herve Mercedes Rail Intervention Unit
This is a special appliance. Between Herve and Liege (Belgium) is a 6 kilometre long railway tunnel. On this track the High speed train is running. There are two of these units available. On is based in Liege, the other one is this one based in Herve. The French company built this unit on a impressive Mercedes Benz 1828 F 8x8 Axor chassis. There is a special installation which make is possible to drive on the rails.

These road-rail dual purpose trucks have also appeared in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It seems that, like this one, they are mainly designed for fires in rail tunnels, so they usually turn up in the mountains.
A few of these tunnels have dedicated "fire trains", which seems like a very expensive solution - although these road-rail units are not cheap. One quote (from a VFD in Austria) is that they cost about three times a standard pumper.
Our local lads on Long Island handled a tire warehouse fire next to the train tracks a few years back, using two normal road pumpers - came close to shaking the trucks to pieces, and everyone except the drivers walked alongside!
