Ford D series (MND714P) Gtr Manchester 1970's.

This was taken at a fire in a back street in Manchester. There was a similar machine in the North East during the 80's (might have been MND718P) but that's all the details I have.

Chris, the machine is showing E57. Hyde fire station in GMCFS. This appliance ended her days at Woodford Aerodrome in Cheshire. These Ford D1617/HCB-Angus WrL's were my favourite appliances in Greater Manchester. Perkins V8 engines, main beam and a lot of noise, plus the day-glo red livery, made them for me. OVU854R ended her days at Sterling Organics in Northumberland. That appliance served in Blackley.

Thanks for this Andy. Will try and get all my fire photos digitalised so's I can put up the other Manchester appliance.

Greater Manchester had a lot of these in their fleet in the late 70's early 80's. The first fire engine I rode was one of these based at Withington in Manchester URJ791S. If anyone has a picture of that particular fire engine I'd be grateful of a copy.

Have any of these survived into preservation or still around?

I did see one at the Crich tramway museum when they had an emergency services day but I don't know who owned it. I can't remember which Brigade it originally belonged to either so it wasn't exactly the same as the Manchester appliances. I do have a picture of it if your interested though.

There is a picture of a Grampian D Series on here picture 21937, I think it only has two rear lockers per side though?

I have pictures of most of these appliances on my website. Strangely this is one that has so far eluded me.

HCB Angus built a very nicely integrated crew cab on these Manchester D1617s. They learned a lot in the ten years since they supplied the first bodies for the eleven D600s I sold to Gloucestershire!

These - which can be seen in various photos on this site - had the standard Ford cab and a separate and very boxy rear body, which included the crew cab. Unlike the later D series, they had specially sourced North American petrol engines, because the county brigade did not want diesels.

The Perkins V8 was indeed a noisy beast of an engine, but it turned up powering a lot of fire applainces in its day - including many Dennis, Dodge, ERF, Ford and S&D chassis.

Lancs., Staffs. and Surrey had very similar machines. I think GMC copied what they took over from Lancs. in 74

Just come across a very interesting vieo on YouTube following Greater Manchester Police patrols on the M62 back in the winter of 1979. Well worth a viewing as it includes scenes of Ford D series and Range Rovers from Greater Manchester Fire attending various incidents on the motorway. Oh and watch out for the ambulance colliding with a police Granada on the snow covered carriageway!!

No nonsense northern coppers in appalling weather, clearing motorways in five minutes with their Range Rovers that would now have to be a full closure for hours with a cast of thousands!
