Combination rescue pumpers are comparatively unusual in Japan. Most are either just pumpers or dedicated rescues, which used to be the case in most other countries too.
The reason? Because of their narrow streets and alleys many Japanese towns just cannot always rely on deploying larger vehicles like this one, which combines both roles. One solution in some fire stations is to have one squad (five firefighters) crew either a pumper or the rescue, depending on the nature of the reported incident.
