Question:-
Could you please let me know positions of blue lights/bells for modelling purposes. Also, was it one of a batch, or was FMO 635 an only one?
Thanks in anticipation.

Can anyone confirm - or deny this appliance has since been scrapped ?

Rick,
This appliance was around 12 months ago in Gloucestershire as it was up for sale and I spoke to the chap who owned it. Got the feeling he was in two minds as to whether he should keep it or sell. He said it was in good condition then except for minor attention needed to the brakes and some wood rot at the rear.

Richard

Tony,

Stoke-on-Trent had three F12 jobs, these being OVT 833, PVT 699 and SVT 414.
None of my shots show any of these F12s with blue beacons, but their practice at the time seems to have been to retro-fit one Marchall on the front ofside of the roof.

Ian, I believe that Stoke-on-Trent also had two F8's?

Andrew, I have WVT 945 and 216 DEH as F8s with Stoke-on-Trent.

Thank you Chris. That's filled a gap.

SVT 414 was replaced in 1969 not 1974 at Longton by XVT 315G a Dennis F45 WrL. In the early 1970 I used to go past Longton Fire Station every day. They had a Dennis F8.

I know that this unpainted body panelling was a less expensive option than good old red paintwork, and did not need so much maintenance.

But it really spoils the otherwise very elegant lines of the F12, and does nothing to enhance any of the numerous other appliances which had this kind of finishing.

At least no other country seems to have been interested in this type of low-budget bodywork, which unfortunately looks so much like recycled old-style aluminium dustbins. A few British-built exports had this kind of cladding, but there are few examples - if any - elsewhere in Europe, the Americas or Asia.

I am not sure this strictly utilitarian bodywork is appropriate for a bin wagon (garbage truck), much less a fire appliance - whose appearance should be a source of pride for those who ride in it and maintain it.

Rob, Agree with every word you wrote, BUT, as you well know the people who actually use these appliances have very little say in how they put together or decorated. Pride has no financial worth, according to "them" so our hero's get what they are given and have to put up with it!
My own feeling is that wheels within wheels will turn and there will be a return to "pride" being a good thing and "design" being important with "finance" back in it's correct place. BUT not in my time !!

Ian - may we both live long enough!

As an interesting matter of record, a lot of fire departments here in the US do in fact collect a lot of input from their members. This is true of both full-time and volunteer services, and in many volunteer companies the members are very much involved in apparatus specifications.

Generally, this tends to be a good idea.....but one result is the very wide range of different designs, some of which are probably unnecessarily idiosyncratic!

I joined Stoke-on-Trent Fire Brigade in April 1962. I drove both OVT 833 (F12) & 216 DEH on numerous occasions. Thought this may be of interest.
