Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service once operated around 28 of these appliances, although most are now in the reserve fleet. This one was based at Liverpool City Fire Station
I'm trying to find out some information about the large fire that occured in Liverpool in 1980 - at the St Johns market and shopping precinct. I'm looking for pictures and if possible some sort of make up detail. I remember the fire when I was a kid but I've drawn a blank trying to find anything out about it.
Any information anyone has would be gratefully received!
There were 2 serious fires at St Johns Precinct, the 2nd being by far the larger. There was a good write up in Fire Magazine at the time. From memory and conversation the biggest problems were lack of ventilation and sprinklers plus of course no fire separation due to display windows. I think it went to over 20 pumps, certainly Tarleton were there from 20 miles away. At that time there were quite a few more pumps around Merseyside than is the case today.
