Perhaps the CO sensor triggered an automatic fire alarm, rather than specifically indicating a CO risk to the dispatch center. In such a case, the engineer of the first due engine (who does not enter the building) will automatically hook up to the hydrant, which is standard operating procedure, while the company officer and/or batallion chief are establishing the status of the alarm.

CO sensors can of course be set off by smouldering low level fires affecting the Oxygen content thus activating the alarm.....makes sense to be prepared with the hydrant conection

Were they called to a CO alarm and discovered something else

OR...

Were they called to something else discovered it was a CO alarm.

Either way an enhanced response and state of operations is not just understandable but necessary.

Quite right.

The FDNY first alarm response to structures in most of Manhattan (including lower Broadway) is three Engines, two Trucks, one Rescue or Squad and a Batallion Chief, at the minimum. Members responding number around thirty-two.
