Great bit of New York's "Great White Way" atmosphere, that you have captured, Jacques. Right down to the by-stander "taking a break" on the Engine's well-equipped front bumper.

Jacques,do you know the registration number of this apparatus, did you actually take a picture of the front?.All I need to know is the SP???? number which will be displayed behind the chap sitting on the bumper.I think this was actually a converted pumper.Thanks,Pete.

On July 1st,1998 Engine Company 18 was designated Squad Company 18 when the City of New York recognised the need to have more specialized units.Squad Co 18 was one of 6 Engine Companies to be designated as Squad Companies and until 1998,Squad Company 1 was the only one operating in New York City.
The Company first used a converted 1988 Mack CF/Ward 79 pumper, then in 1998 were assigned this converted 1998 Seagrave 1000/500 pumper. In the year 2000,Squad Co 18 received a purpose built Seagrave Squad Unit which was actually one of 5 delivered, and then again in 2001 were to recieve one of 2 purchased by the FDNY that year.A photo of the later(picture 4058)appears on this site.
Squad Company 18 operates from the historic West Village district at 132 West 10th Street in the Borough of Manhattan from a Firehouse built in 1892,and is one of the busiest of the 7 Squad Companies and responds to approximately 3,500 runs per year.

Pete - very interesting! Just how does a Squad Unit vary from a standard FDNY Engine?
