1970 Bedford TKM/Furgusson Water Carrier.

From 1970,this Bedford TKM/Fergusson(reg-AMY 708H)was originally a Brewery Tanker. It was then purchased in 1980 by the West Sussex Fire Brigade and was converted by Brigade Workshops into a Water Carrier(WrC)which carried 3000 gallons. The WrC was put on the run at Littlehampton Fire Station and served at that station until going out of service in 1991,I took this photograph around 1985 in the drill yard at East Preston Fire Station during an Open Day.
From 1991,a new Water Carrier was purchased this being a Ford Cargo 1271/Boughton(picture 4149)Water Carrier, interestingly enough though, part of the old Bedford lived on for many more years, the old Beer/Water tank from AMY 708H was re-chassied onto the Ford Cargo(reg-H197 GKM)and served for many more years at Littlehampton Fire Station.

I understood this appliance was an ex:William Cory Fuel Tanker, supplied by Potters of Singleton, nr Chichester, there is no mention of it in the 1980 annual report up to 31/12/1980. Do you have an OTR date? I thought it was 1982?

I query the 3000 gallons (13.4 tons)of water on a
16 ton chassis. the unladen weight must be around
the six ton mark ?

Definitely not 3000 gallons, and I am pretty sure that it was a maximum of 2000 gallons.

Martyn, I was led to beleave from Littlehampton personnel that this was beleaved to have been converted from an ex-Brewery Tanker???.
It states from the WSFB Annual Report(1st Jan/31st Dec, 1981)the Bedford Water Carrier was converted for Fire Brigade use in Brigade Workshops and placed on the run at Station 07 Littlehampton during 1981.
Maybe Bob Carver can give us an exact date of when it actually went on the run, he may also be able to answer how many gallon/litres the WrC carried, only the quantity mensioned above was again what I was told by personnel.Pete.

2000 gallon tank on this by the looks of it, having driven and operated 3000 gallon machines on 3 axles, this is to short.

Ill stick by my information on its source, and agree with Tony Morris about its capacity, i seem to remember it being 5 X WRT/WRL capacity, and was sure it did not go OTR 1980, and are pleased to be informed it was 1981, although I was led to believe it was 1982 from Bob Carver.Did the Annual report for 1981 mention the transfer from AMY 708H to H197 GKM of the tank?

I have today spoken to West Sussex F & R.S.Assistant Transport Officer, who was at Workshops in 1981, he has confirmed that this applaince was a Ex:William Cory Fuel Tanker, supplied by Potters, also that the 330 Diesel Engine was changed for a uprated unit to give more performance, he also states that the tank was not transferred to H197 GKM, which I also thought to be the case, but wanted confirmation, AMY 708H he thinks was disposed of via BLackbushe Auctions.

Martyn, thanks for clearing up afew details on the Bedford WrC(AMY 708H), and the 1991 Ford/Boughton WrC(H197 GKM)from Littlehampton.
When I was researching info for this WrC it stated in the Fire Brigades Handbook on Special Appliances in both Book 1 and Book 2 that the tank from AMY708H was transferred to H197GKM so this I took as being correct. There is no way I intended to mislead in my written details on this appliance, but wrote what I found and thought this to be correct. Thanks for correcting this and the other added information.Pete.
