this appliance was used in the early londons burning series
Pat it was all a fairy tale! London had those funny maroon outfits at the time and Gaul helmets, on makeups they used to call us county types "the poor country cousins"!
Barrie - I never thought of the siren sound being devised and "dubbed in" - Gee, it wasn't all Gospel, then...
John, those yellow "jet-fighter-pilot" style helmets, that come down over the ears, and have the built-in visors that slide up, under cover; worn with the maroon bunker gear....are they the Gaul helmets...?
Haven't seen "London's Burning" for some years now(since retiring from The Ambulance); so I am out-of touch...
Yes Pat, I think they were a French pattern and they came with a flash hood to cover the neck. I much preferred our Cromwells though, made you look less like an alien!
The Gallet helmet was indeed developed in France - and is now standard in several countries, as well as bring quite widespread internationally well beyond Europe.
But many major fire services retain older designs, not least some big German cities who retain the WWII military style headgear, and although there are Gallets in Canada now, they don't seem to have made any impression in the US nor in Japan.
They do seem to have advantages when it comes to donning facepieces quickly and in that they can come with built-in radios and lights as options, and they are lighter than some others - but it seems some users find them a bit claustrophobic.
