Hose laying (Brunei Style)

Some innovative ideas taken by the Brunei Firefighters. Seen here they laid the hoses by tying it to the fire appliance bumper then reversing it to the next fire point. In this case the Brunei Fire and Rescue Department (BFRD) 2009 Mercedes Atego with SK Fire bodyworks Water Tanker no.4 (WRT4) was used. Photo taken during the large scale forest fire in Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).

Nice action photo. Just an fyi this "playing out the hose" in this manner is not something new. We in the US do the same thing on virtually every fire except we call it a forward lay (drop our LDH- large diameter hose- at fire hydrant and lead out TO the structure fire) or a reverse lay (drop our LDH- large diameter hose- and usually 2 attack lines) at the structure fire and leed out TO the hydrant. Regardless of the name, it is the best and most effeciant way of "laying lines". One question though. How are they able to do this as they do not keep their hose connected together, instead choosing to keep it in rolls? Once again, great picts.

Its an interesting shot Bomba. Todd, hoselaying is great for wide streets or for incidents on open ground and I have seen the USAF use it for water transfer on airfields. I love the "traditional" method used in the UK though, perfected by hours of drill, usually with a sadistic subby repeating the excercise on a cold wet day in the yard. Now thats firefighting.

Same as Todd; I am wondering how they pay out the hose, if it is stowed in individual rolls.

Perhaps, pre-connected and on a large reel...?

BTW, I would love to see some photos of a disciplined crew doing a traditional hose-lay, with the individual rolls....not to argue which way is best .....just to see how it is done.

Pat, we have always used hose drill from basic training and its still a part of station daily life. Its always been found to instil skill and discipline in an individual. There used to be a strong tradition of military foot drill as well in basic and advanced training.
There was a healthy competition years ago of drill contests within brigades, each public and many works brigades would vie against other teams for trophies. Usually followed by alcoholic revelry. I wish to point out I never took part in revelry..... but know some people on here who did!
