Old Haunts Revisited

This picture was taken in Wells on Friday 17th July 2009. It shows ex Somerset Fire Brigade Dennis F28's 22FYD and 25LYD parked next to the moat which surrounds the Bishops Palace. These appliances were both stationed at Wells in the sixties and seventies and on a Monday night which was this retained stations drill night, would have regularly been seen at this location parked in the same position. This is because the moat and nearby river along with the nearby fields provided an ample water supply for carrying out quarterly pump tests and getting a number of jets to work. Many a new recruit at Wells has also ended up in the moat but of course health and safety no longer allows such character building.

What a grand story and picture Paul, many thanks!

I second John's motion - what an original water source; "drafting" out of a genuine castle moat; and tossing "rookie" firemen into it.....

Great photo of 2 variant bodies.

Well done!

Was the appliance on the left a pump escape?

Added by Rob Johnson on 11 August 2017.
Yes Rob the appliance on the left 22FYD was originally a pump escape and then converted into a WRL with a lacon. The conversion was a rather crude one by Somerset Fire Brigade workshops which entailed using scaffold tube as the new ladder gantry at the rear.

Thanks Paul. I assume the conversion included boosting the tank capacity from the original 100 gallons to 400, too...
